Most folks answer this question one of the three ways noted below. While I understand each response, let me share a different perspective on each of them.
“Baby photographers are too expensive!”
Newborn photography can be expensive but your newborn is worth it! You only get but a fleeting moment to relish in your newborn’s adorable button nose, tiny fingers and tiny toes. You’ll experience many stages as your baby grows but you’ll quickly find the newborn stage is the shortest of all. Don’t take it for granted. Hire someone with skill and expertise to coordinate, plan and capture such a monumental moment so that it’s preserved for a lifetime.
“I can take them with my iPhone!”
Camera phones do a really good job in many instances. However, I’m sure you’ll agree that there’s a quality and an undeniable skillset that comes with hiring a professional in any field. For example, I do a really good job styling and coloring my own hair. But, there is a noticeable difference between my results and the results of my hairstylist. He possesses a skillset and expertise that I don’t have. As a result, he produces a quality of work at a level that I’m unable to achieve. The same rings true in this scenario. An iPhone may get the job done but a newborn photographer will provide expertise that will result in gorgeous and timeless images.
“I’ve thought about it but I think I can do without it”
You can do without it but why is that even an option? The arrival of your newborn is a moment that will forever change your world. While all moments in your baby’s life will be precious, there’s something beautiful and tender in meeting your baby for the very first time. It brings about a warmth and joy that parents, siblings and grandparents cherish always. It’s worth capturing.
My perspective doesn’t come from being a newborn photographer. It comes from being a mom who regrets not investing in newborn photos. When I see the smiles and tears of joy these photos bring parents and loved ones, I’m always reminded how I cheated myself out of capturing something so special. It truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
This post has really made me rethink investing in newborn photography. Well written!
